SELF-HELP BOOKS WANTED
SelfHelpBooks.com is both an "on-line" or "virtual" bookstore committed to mental health and a worldwide publisher seeking the latest problem-focused, self-help books.
We do NOT publish textbooks or books directed toward a professional-technical audience. Rather as publishers we seek two kinds of popular books:
- those written by mental health professionals specifically for the general public to help them cope with problems of living (such as: How to Assert Yourself, How to Make Up, Dealing with Loss, Kicking the Tobacco Habit, etc.), and
- those written by people who have successfully coped with adversity. [These are personal experiences usually of non-mental health professionals who adaptively coped with a problem and share the experience by writing about it (such as: Single Again & Doing Well, Staying Off the Sauce, You Can Stop Being Abused - I Did, etc.)]
PREVIOUSLY-PUBLISHED, OUT-OF-PRINT BOOKS
SelfHelpBooks.com also accepts previously-published, out-of-print books. For such books you will need to provide documentation that you own the copyright and that all publishing rights have reverted back to you. If you do not know if the publishing rights have reverted back to you, you can send a Letter to Publisher (See sample letter) and request that the Publishing Rights (See sample form) revert back to you. Yes, your classic book(s) can have a new life and new readers on the worldwide Internet through SelfHelpBooks.com.
HOW TO SUBMIT A BOOK OR MANUSCRIPT
To submit a book for publication by SelfHelpBooks.com, the author(s) must send:
- a brief query letter (1 or 2 pages max) selling us your book idea
- a resume/vitae of author credentials to write such a book
- education
- professional experience
- past publications
- a detailed outline of the proposed book
- a sample chapter (10 pages max) of the best written section of the book
NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT SEND SelfHelpBooks.com full, unsolicited manuscripts.
We, in turn, promise to respond within four (4) months to all book proposals for publication.
Our editorial staff will review all query letters, and, if we like your book idea and want to see the full manuscript, we will specifically request it be sent to SelfHelpBooks.com.
Proposals are evaluated in terms of their concepts, clarity and elegance of the writing, as well as grammar, spelling, and punctuation, so please copy edit prior to submission.
Upon our request for such a full manuscript, our preferred method of author submission will be electronically via e-mail to SelfHelpBooks.com with a text file attachment in a WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, or Rich Text file format.
An alternative submission method of the full manuscript (only upon our specific request of it) will be to mail a diskette containing a WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, or Rich Text Format file of your book to SelfHelpBooks.com.
Hard copy submissions of full manuscripts our editors request will also be accepted.
The desirable length of a self-help book to submit to us is between 100 to 300 pages if single spaced after editing. To submit the full manuscript when requested by us, however, PLEASE DOUBLE or TRIPLE SPACE all text and PROOF READ before submitting!
VERIFYING RECEIPT OF SUBMISSION
To verify a mail submission, please send it Registered Mail and Return Receipt Requested at a Post Office. E-mail submissions can be confirmed by a return e-mail from us if you specifically request. Do not telephone to confirm receipt of submission, as this is very disruptive of our review process. Never send an only copy of anything, and always keep a copy of what you submit in case anything is lost in transmission.
RETURNING SUBMISSIONS
If you want your pre-printed book, diskette, or hard-copy submission returned, please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope and specifically request it in a cover letter.
QUICK REVIEW
Our editorial staff will review all book proposals and respond within four (4) months.
If we want to consider publishing your book at SelfHelpBooks.com, our editors will request the full manuscript. If the book is accepted for publication, you will receive a standard contract. As soon as the contract is signed and copies are returned to all parties, your book will be edited and on-line within an additional six (6) weeks.
CONTRACT
The WELLNESS INSTITUTE, INC. seeks the exclusive rights to publish your book and sell it over the Internet through our virtual bookstore, SelfHelpBooks.com, or any other way we may deem appropriate. You will be offered 40% of the net income we receive on all copies of your book sold electronically and 10% of the net price of all books sold as print copies. Special royalty rates may be offered to authors who have had a best seller.
